Song Thrush
Very common breeder with CBC figures much as last years & a moderately successful breeding season. First fledged juv seen on Apr 23 rd. Present throughout though distinctly scarce in late summer. Usual autumn influx with 16 in one field in Cleadale on Nov 17 th.
Redwing
Present in small numbers up until Apr 20 th, max of 25 on March 29 th. Autumn passage from Oct 15 th & good numbers throughout late Oct, 520 on Oct 17 th & 220 on Oct 25 th. Passage continued through early Nov with small numbers remaining until the years end.
Mistle Thrush
5 prs bred (8 prs last year) & seemingly a poor year with few young & no big flocks seen. Scarce from late July & no records after Nov 3 rd.
Sedge Warbler
34 prs present, very much as per last year, with all but one pair nesting in the croftland. Seemingly a moderate breeding season. Birds present from May 2 nd until Aug 10 th.
Marsh Warbler
A singing bird in Millers garden on June 10 th (JC, B Gardner) was a first record for the island.
Whitethroat
49 prs present, a big drop from the 2004 total of 64 prs, with the croftland (30 prs) again being the main area. Overall a reasonably successful breeding season with a good number of juvs seen. Birds present May 10 th - Sept 8 th.
Blackcap
One pair bred at the Lodge with another three singing M also present in the SE woods. Recorded from Apr 21 st with one bird continuing to sing well into mid July. A F at the Manse Wood on Sept 7 th was the only autumn record with unusually no passage during Oct-Nov.
Wood Warbler
No breeding though three records of singing M in the SE woods; on May 11 th (J Leck), on May 16 th (JC) & a late bird on June 16 th (JC).
Chiffchaff
Two singing birds present at the Lodge Grounds from May 13th – mid June but no suggestion of breeding. Early migrants on March 29 th-30 th & Apr 18 th, both in the SE woods. In autumn a long staying individual was present in the croftland between Oct 19 th & Nov 9 th.
Willow Warbler
A very common breeder with CBC figures much as last years & a good year with many young raised. First fledged juvs seen on June 20 th. Adults present from Apr 12 th with main arrival Apr 20 th-25 th. Fast departure in early Aug & occasional records only from mid Aug with last sighting on Sept 6 th.
Goldcrest
Common resident in the woodland areas though figures from CBC plots down 20% on last year. Seemingly a pretty average breeding season with fair numbers of fledged juvs seen. Flocks wandered widely during the autumn period.
Spotted Flycatcher
A good year with four pairs breeding successfully in the SE woods. Birds present from May 27 th until Aug 24 th with sightings unusually regular during Aug.
Blue Tit
Extremely common resident & an excellent breeding season with CBC figures up 40% on last year & many young reared. Several pairs bred in nestboxes. Very common throughout though some reduction in numbers in winter.
Coal Tit
Fairly common resident in the woodland areas though CBC figures show a drop of 40% on last year. Seemingly a pretty indifferent breeding season as few fledged juvs seen. Present throughout.
Great Tit
Very common resident & a good breeding season with CBC plots showing a small increase on last year & many young raised. Several pairs bred in nestboxes. Numerous throughout.
Long Tailed Tit
Four at the Lodge on June 30 th (N Robertson) was the only summer record. In autumn a group of up to six was present from Oct 18 th ( E Weldon) until the years end.
Treecreeper
8 prs bred in the SE woods, down 2 prs on last year, but a reasonably good breeding season with several broods of young seen. Present throughout in the woodland areas.
